Looking at rule of thirds as research into Digipaks/Art/Meda and Photography

Posted by Unknown on 11:53 in
I have looked at the Rule of thirds, The image below shows a Rule of Thirds grid applied to Green Day's American Idiot, during my editing of my Digipak in Photoshop.

I will upload my thoughts on Rule of thirds and how and what i've done to apply it to my Digipak/Poster, once I've completed the editing of my Digipak

Final design for Digipak/Album Art and Poster - Nick

Posted by Unknown on 11:52 in , , , , , ,
Here is my Poster and Digipak, I know I have until tomorrow to upload it but as I won't be able to make any changes today, I have had to upload it now to make sure I have put it up in time, although if I can tomorrow I'd like to make a few updates to my album.

I have opted to keep make my poster of the same style as my Front cover to my Album as the  quite a few of the adverts that I looked either had the Album cover as their advert with text added to it or was related to the images on their album such as a Green Day poster has the image from the front cover and back cover of the album "21st Century Breakdown" being used for adverts and posters.

The Digipak design that I choose is a 6 panel Wallet. although it contains 7 sides (6 main and a side panel containing the band name, album name and the code e.g. the albums isbn number)

Photoshoot pictures for Digipak and website/poster - Nick

Posted by Unknown on 11:49 in , , , , ,

These are the pictures for my digipak. There are three pictures which I took as evidence of us doing a photoshoot, these are of darren posing for his own digipak and two of damon taking a photo of us, the rest I originally intended on using although not all are of a decent quality so won't be used, I expected this as I never thought all of the photos would be what I wanted, but I'm still happy with them

HWS ERA now has a URL

Posted by Unknown on 22:38 in , , , , ,
I have registered a URL for a website for my digipack.
At the Moment It only goes to the Group Blog but once I have designed my own site, it'll have it's own page.
I'm not sure if we can access it from school although I believe we should be able to, as it won't contain anything it shouldn't.

Filming

Posted by Unknown on 20:51 in , ,
Today we filmed our final version of the music video.
I think that it went well overall, although We need to get 3 more shots that we didn't get time to film today (I had to leave early as I had an interview), but except for these shots, which we plan on filming Saturday, the filming overall went well as we got lots of filming done, we got photos of each other filming, and performing. I plan on uploading photos to the blog soon, but I need to get them all first

Band Name Change

Posted by Unknown on 20:38 in , , , , ,
Previously our band was called Leaking Pipe (Click here, for a link to a previous post about band name and logo's by Darren King) but we thought that this was too similar to Linkin Park plus it was cheesy and frankly not very good, although at first we agreed to use it, Personally I wasn't sure about it but didn't mind using it as I couldn't think of anything else that we all agreed on. A couple of days ago we decided that we didn't like the name, and needed to change it, so we all gave ideas for the name but at least one of us didn't like it. I suggested the name HW's ERA which we agreed should be our bands new name.
As Darren has the job of creating logo's and is the main designer of the Album, he has designed the new logo for the Band. I hope to upload the image of the latest logo asap, I can't upload it right now as I don't have a copy to do so.
Personally I am allot Happier with the name HW's Era than Leakin Pipe, I think it sounds more professional and more like a name of a rock band.
Our Logo is a hand grenade which has the Letters HW printed on the Inside of the main section of the grenade. It kind of looks similar to this picture although the handle/pin is on the right and has HW on the Centre. The HW has been cleverly incorporated into the design of the grenade as it blends in with the colour and design.

Filming Date - Update

Posted by Unknown on 09:13 in , , ,
We are filming tomorrow (Thursday 18th November), as long as everything goes correctly e.g. we get the permission to use the drum kit in broughton, we'll be filming at my house in my garage.
(It won't look like this when we are filming)

We will be filming until about 3:30/4pm from 10 o'clock, I believe that this will be plenty of time but if necessary we will be able to film there again, when we need.

Video of possible location

This is a very quick video of the location that we may film.
I have had to change the audio using YouTube's audio switcher as I thought I had turned my Microphone off, as me and my dad was talking, turns out I didn't

0

Location of final production

These are pictures of where I believe would be the best place for us to film, plus there are a couple of pictures of me, the clothing and shoes in the shots that I'm wearing, are what I had thought of wearing during the performance, although I'm not positive about the jumper as I'm not sure if it fits correctly with everything else, whereas I think the scruffy skater shoes and skinny/slim jeans along with my scarf fits what I want my characters profile to be like.

The location shots differ, but not in location they are only in my house either my living room or garage, I think my garage will look better with my door down, as it will make the mes en scene look grungy, dirty and altogether more of a location where a rock band may film, as it doesn't look like a typical garage, you may be able to tell it's a garage but with posters etc on the walls and doors it will be disguised.
I have asked my dad to put an extra 4ft florescent light in, as we have a spare which we kept from when we redecorated. This should give us plenty of lighting in there, as it will have two 4ft florescent lights and if we need it we can add more by using halogen lamps which can be plugged into a nearby socket.

Location Shots for final filming

These pictures are of either my garage or my living room, where I think we should film for our final filming.
In the living room, all of my dogs toys etc won't be in there whilst filming. I just forgot to pick them up.
In my garage I won't have anything on the left and right walls except for posters/pictures that I will put up, plus  from the back wall I have some white sheets that I'm going to use to cover up my freezer and two work benches which are  covered by blue and green blankets, on the right side of the far wall I will be able to remove quite a bit of the stuff there, but I have put some plywood in front of them for now to give an example of roughly how it might look.

All of this is only if we decide that we want to film here, personally I believe that my garage is the best place to film as we would be able to film here all day without any restrictions. I have also asked my mum and dad if we would be able to film in my living room during the week or weekends and they have said that I would be able to do so.

I am remaking my flow diagram as I produced my original version on the internet, but I found out afterwards that I had already used my allocated save space, on other projects e.g. ICT coursework, so now I am having to remake it, and I won't be interactive like I had hoped it will probably be just a picture unless I decide to make it on flash and then embed it.

I like this picture, as I think that if we had a similar photo but as front cover to our album, with similar titles and art around the picture.
This picture came from a Calendar, that I didn't get around to throwing away, just hung the new one on top of it.

We have decided to use Twitter and Facebook for our Band, for our Twitter acounts we are going to have one each and then one for the band, the band members will be both personal and professional, I think it was a good idea for us to do this as this is what quite a few professional bands do, a prime example of this is Paramore, who have a band twitter account and then individual twitter accounts Such as Hayley Williams' yelyahwilliams twitter

My Twitter Account is DaveKiedis
Darrens Acount it DKing92

Background for band performance scenes

Posted by Unknown on 00:05 in , , , , , ,

These are pictures that I took on my camera. They are either posters that are either mine or my brother Alex's. although there are about 6/7 (maybe more posters) the majority of them are old green day calendars that we would be able to cut the pictures of and use them.

The reason I thought of using these types of pictures was because where we was thinking of filming (my garage, photo's will be uploaded soon) has a white breeze block wall, which I'm not sure would fit our filming requirements, so if we cover these with appropriate posters then it will help.

British Telecom Phone Exchange

Posted by Unknown on 09:34 in , , ,

These pictures are of Broughton Astley/Sutton in the Elms BT phone exchange, I Like this location becuase of the building. We would have as the background setting, I believe that this location looks more industrial and grungy which is closer to the type of scenery/location that we require for our music video. Although I liked our draft location, I believe that it didn't quite fit our requirements, for our music performance. The benches and the ornate stone wall doesn't fit our genre of music, Although I did like it, especially how the guitarists and singer had the chance to be on elevated and the drummer and drumkit was based on the floor, this allowed us to switch positioning between the regualar places of the lead singer/guitarists adn the durmmer, but I think that it would have been good if we could use something else instead of the benches as they weren't appropriate.

Although I do like the suggested location I can't be positive that we will be allowed to use it, I have to ask my Dad, but haven't had chance to yet, last night I was filming until quite late and on Monday night,  it never crossed my mind, as I didn't think to ask. I think we may be allowed, but if we are there may be BT van parked in the Exchange's car park.

Tonight's Draft Filming

Posted by Unknown on 21:15 in , , ,
Tonight, we filmed our story scenes of our draft, we are missing about two or three shots as it got too dark for us to film any more, but we are very happy with the shots that we got, tonight.
We now have to edit our filming and put it together as a draft film by Friday, which I fully believe can be done. As we are using our own software we will have access to it at home as well as school, which should allow us more time to complete the editing.

Here are some pictures of us filming, there are more to come but I currently can't get them off my pc, should be up by tomorrow.
I haven't got any pictures of myself (on my phone) filming, they where taken using either damons or darrens camera. I'll try to put these up as soon as possible

I hope it works this time as it's about our 5th attempt for our filming, and 2nd for our story scenes...

Today's Weather forecast is; Cloudy, chance of rain, grey/dull, possibly windy but not going to be strong.

Website Draft Designs

Posted by Unknown on 21:38 in , ,
I have been messing around with some draft designs for our website, I have been looking at other websites and have found some pretty interesting different websites for bands which are of the same genre as our band and song. Although there artists are of the same genre of music, they're websites don't have much similarity in designs, for example;

Linkin Park's Enter page
Queens of the Stone Age - Homepage
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Enter page

I'm not sure which software I'm going to use I have a choice between iWeb 11 from Apple based on Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Adobe's Dreamweaver mx 2004 on Windows 7.
Whilst Dreamweaver allows for the user to create a website from scratch, Apple's iWeb allows the user to add some very apathetically pleasing widgets, effortlessly. But at the moment I like the idea of making my website flash based so I can add some nice features as well as animation to it, this means I will probably use Dreamweaver but get some widget inspiration from iWeb.

I may post some printscreens of some draft designs tomorrow or if I get time I'll publish a site which has images and live drafts so you'll be able to use them to see which you think is best.

Filming Errors

Posted by Unknown on 20:00 in , , , , , ,
Last night we started our filming of our draft for the second time, after the first time we filmed it in a car park which with in an hour or so the car park's lights where turned off. after some errors (including, getting there and people getting a date with everybody being free to film) trying to re film in the Rugby, We decided that we were going to film in Croft for our draft. We arrived at 4 o'clock ish and started at about 4:20pm ish after setting up the drums, guitars, camera's etc. We spent about 2-3 hours filming, but in review of our footage today we discovered we where missing of shots that we thought we had filmed last night. Although we are now missing some these shots, we have to film them again, and as a consequence we are no planning on filming tomorrow after school, we have checked and the weather(please see weather app below) should be the same weather and are allowed to film in the same location.

We are also planning on filming the story section of our music video on Sunday afternoon, This is the best date for us to film as we are available to film that day. Although the weather says that there is a possibility of rain, this may only affect some of our filming as we are going to be filming inside, but also out side but for  the minority of our time spent filming.

Digital Media Pack

Posted by Unknown on 11:06 in , ,
I have been researching websites for our digital media pack, I wanted to embed websites onto my blog, although I found the code to allow embeding, but it didn't work correctly.

I have been looking at Green Day, Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, and Red Hot Chili Peppers' website they all have enter/entrance pages.

I like idea of including a enter page into the website as well as images

0

cd design

I believe that we should have a cd layout, similar to this, e.g. with a picture, song titles, band and album title, record label title/logo along with the autifentication numbers and text.

1

cd printing

Posted by Unknown on 09:56 in , , , , , , ,
For our cd design we are planning of having an image printed onto the cd, it may not be the exact same image as album cover, as normally a professional cd would have a different image.

I have sent Linkin Park an email asking for permission, I should hopefully hear back soon.

I couldn't find a "Contact us" link or anything like it on either the Linkin Park website or Warner Brothers Music, So I ended up signing up as a member then emailing Chester Bennington

I have just found a section where it allows you to send a message to "Team LP", on there section of the site it says you can contact them talking about the New Linkin Park website or ask them any questions you may have so I sent them the same message as I did to Chesters

BA Location change possible

We have been having difficulties recently with filming our draft. We started filming on Monday evening/night, in the Clock Towers, Rugby, but the lights of turned off which left us in an empty car park in the dark, unable to film, although we did get some shots we didn't complete the necessary shots. We have tried to rearrange with everyone the best day to film, and we are having difficulties getting everyone to rugby to film at Damon's uncles and the Clock Towers, so I propose we film at the location above in the pictures (only the car park ones), this is easier for Me, Darren, Rhys and Alex (actors), haven't had chance to speak to Damon as he is working today, but he will also need to ask his Sister and Brother in Law (actress and actor) whether it would be better for them to film here, but it is definitely closer. It wouldn't be quite what we originally planned and maybe we would still be able film in the planned places for our final film but as we need to get some decent shots for our draft production, we are now under some extreme pressure to get it completed soon.
So moving location for at least our draft filming would be the best option for most of us if not all of us, as we wouldn't be wasting time getting to rugby 3 of us would be able to walk, and others would have  to arrive by a short 5-10 min car drive compared to 25/30 mins.

I am still thinking of a place to film instead of inside Damon's uncles house and rugby town centre but maybe Broughton Astely village centre Chill Out Cafe would be able an idea for the coffee shop scene.

Audience Profiling Answers

Overall unexpectantly we have more people liking who said they liked the music genre Rock, also most people we asked said that they did like Linkin Park, although I suspect that they only like a couple of them, I believe this because of the Transformers movies and their collaborations with Jay-Z and Busta Rhymes, I think this because even though the majority of people put that they liked rock, Linkin Park has been featured as the official artists of the Transformers movies, and have made an album with Jay-Z as well as toured with them, they have also made singles with Busta Rhymes.

We also had the majority of people questioned answering that they preferred illustrate music videos, which also had a narrative compared to a live performance type video.

Ideas for Music Video

I had an idea for our music video,
We could use black and white shots for the husband when he finds out about his wife cheating on him, and colour for the wife, when she is cheating on her husband. I think this would look good because we could use the colour to represent the happiness of the wife and the black and white shots would show disappointment, upset, depression, unhappiness etc in the husbands feelings.

We could also change the wife's colour shots to black and white at the end after she slaps him and she realises what's she's doing. (I don't think this is as good an ideas as the first but I still like it, although I'm not sure how well it would work).

depending on the filming equipment we have, we plan on using a school camera and Darren's camera, I believe we might be able to film in black and white although it would probably look better if we filmed all in colour and added the black and white effects after production by using Sony's Vegas Pro 9 editing software.

(This last photo should be in colour although I thought it was appropriate to our narrative)

I also think we could maybe add in something similar to this, during editing (I believe with the software we are going to use it is), it would look best right towards the end.

I have tried to scan my questionnaire feedback into my computer so I could put it on animoto, slideshare, flickr etc, but my computers keeps giving me a message saying use another scanner and my scanner says scanning but then does nothing. I am going to try again in the morning, then if that doesn't work I'll take photo's of them as. If I end up taking photo's of them I won't be uploaded until tomorrow evening, as I'm at Sheffield Hallam University open day, and probably won't be home until 5 or 6 o'clock especially as we think we may hit traffic from the Sheffield United match
